Lesson Title: Freedon and Slavery
Grade Level: 11th
Unit: Civil War
Content Standards:SSUSH8 The student will explain the relationship between growing north-south divisions and westward expansion.
Instructional Objective(s): Students will be given an T-List chart to fill in with information regarding slavery in the North and South.
ACTION
Before-Class Preparation: The teacher will gather resource books about slavery in the North and South, websites which the students can access, and complete the handout for students to chart their information and a checklist for the teacher to ensure progress is being made towards completion of the objective.
During class
Time: 55 minutes
Instructional Activities: Students will continue workin in their groups as they complete the T-List of slave activity and its impact on life in the North and South. The students will consider why the preservation was important to the South, as opposed to the North and is the issue of freedom based on humanity in their group discussion as they continue to prepare their storyboard.
Materials and Resources: T-List chart, websites, library books, teacher checklist
Ongoing Assessment(s): The teacher will use a check sheet to observe students interaction and work habits during group activity.
EVALUATION
Lesson Reflection and Notes: The students will write a reflection in their journal on what they believe is the right thing to do based on their findings, and what was the importance of slavery as the cause of the Civil War? They will be given 15 minutes.
